Will it Fit? A Visual Guide to Sizing for Mini, Small, and Medium Pet Urns
Losing a companion is a deeply personal experience, and the last thing you want during this time is the technical worry of whether a memorial will be the right fit. One of the most frequent questions we receive in the workshop is: “How do I know which size is right for my pet?”
While our shop listings use weight-based capacities, we understand that it can be difficult to visualise how that translates to a physical object. This guide provides real-world comparisons using common dry pantry staples to help you choose with confidence.
Understanding Capacity: The “Weight to Volume” Rule
The general rule of thumb for cremation urns is that one kilogram of healthy animal weight requires approximately 35 to 40 cubic centimetres of space. To ensure a comfortable fit with room for a small memento, we have calibrated our handcrafted range into four categories.
1. The Mini (Up to 5kg)
The Mini is our most delicate offering, designed for very small companions or as a “keepsake” urn if a family is sharing ashes.
- Visual Example: Approximately one cup (approx. 200g) of dry quinoa or rice.
- The Scale: Roughly the volume of a standard small citrus fruit. It is ideal for a subtle memorial on a bedside table.
- Common Breeds: Toy Poodles, Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, or domestic cats.
2. The Small (Up to 12kg)
The Small urn is the most frequent choice in our workshop, offering a versatile capacity for many popular small breeds.
- Visual Example: Approximately two cups(a 450g bag) of dry lentils or quinoa.
- The Scale: Think of the volume of a standard 500ml bottle of water. It provides a presence that is substantial without being overwhelming.
- Common Breeds: Jack Russell Terriers, French Bulldogs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and larger feline companions.
3. The Medium (Up to 30kg)
In the Medium range, the urn becomes a significant piece of artisan furniture, suited for sturdy, active breeds.
- Visual Example: One standard 1kg bag of long-grain rice (approx. 5-6 cups).
- The Scale: Similar in volume to a 1.2-litre lunch box. This size ensures ample room for most medium-sized dogs.
- Common Breeds: Border Collies, Kelpies, Staffies, and Cocker Spaniels.
4. The Large (Up to 60kg)
The Large memorial is built to honour the “big souls” of the pet world, requiring substantial sections of solid timber to maintain our signature grain wrap.
- Visual Example: Two standard 1kg bags of rice (approx. 10-12 cups).
- The Scale: Roughly the volume of a 2.4-litre juice container or a large mixing bowl.
- Common Breeds: Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Labradors, and Rottweilers.
Why We Use Solid Timber Instead of Volume Measurements
We work exclusively with solid, rack-seasoned timber like Jarrah and Glacial Oak. While mass-produced veneer boxes have thin, fragile walls, our urns are structural tributes. Because we mill everything to a specific thickness for durability, the exterior presence of the urn is significant, while the interior remains a secure, protected environment.
Still Unsure?
If your pet was right on a weight limit—for example, a 12kg dog—we generally recommend moving up to the next size. This ensures you have extra space to include a small memento, such as a collar or a favourite lead, alongside the ashes.
If you have a specific question about a breed or a custom size, please contact the maker directly. We mill all our timber here in the workshop, and we are always happy to help you find the perfect fit for your companion.
