The Maker’s Story

A Cut Above Woodworking Workshop

Inside the Maida Vale workshop.

A Cut Above Woodworking began not as a business, but as a craft.

For years, my focus was on the precision of small-scale woodworking—crafting fine jewellery cases, ring boxes, and small timber treasures. I’ve always been drawn to the technical challenge of box making: the way a lid seats perfectly and the way the grain flows uninterrupted across a corner.

Everything changed when I was asked to create an ashes box from a personal piece of beautiful Western Australian Marri.

As I worked that timber, I realized I wasn’t just making a container; I was crafting a final home. The sense of responsibility and the profound purpose of the task resonated with me deeply.

Today, every memorial that leaves my workshop is approached with that same reverence. Whether it is a Monolith for a family member or a Petite urn for a beloved pet, the standard remains the same.

Our Philosophy

Provenance

We prioritize premium Western Australian hardwoods like Jarrah and Marri, celebrating the natural features that make every piece of timber unique.

The Finish

We use Whittle Waxes Evolution Hardwax and Gilly’s Carnauba Polish. Tactile, non-toxic finishes that allow you to feel the wood.

Respectful Fit

Our designs are purpose-built to house standard Australian liners. We ensure a precise, respectful fit that requires no decanting of ashes.
