The Workshop Story
A Cut Above Woodworking is a dedicated workshop focused on high-tolerance joinery and structural integrity.
My background is rooted in the technical discipline of small-scale woodworking—crafting fine jewellery cases and precision timber boxes. I am driven by the mechanical challenges of the craft: achieving a perfect friction-fit lid, ensuring structural stability in solid hardwoods, and maintaining an uninterrupted grain flow across a corner.
The shift toward memorial work began with a request to build an ashes box from a personal piece of Western Australian Marri.
I realized then that these vessels require more than just aesthetic appeal; they require a commitment to permanence. When a vessel leaves my bench, it is built to serve as a final, secure home, constructed with the same reverence and technical exactness regardless of its size.
Today, I focus on creating memorials that rely on the strength of the timber itself—using zero-fastener joinery techniques like structural splines and interlocking tenons to ensure every piece is built to last.
Build Philosophy
Material Integrity
We work exclusively with rack-seasoned Australian hardwoods like Jarrah, Oak, and Marri. Every board is selected for its structural stability and natural grain feature.
Precision Finish
We utilize Hardwax Oil and Carnauba Polish. These workshop-applied finishes provide a durable, satin-natural protection that highlights the timber’s tactile quality without masking it.
Engineered Fit
Our vessels are bench-built to precise internal tolerances. They are purpose-built to house standard Australian liners securely, ensuring a respectful fit with no modification required.
