Selecting a Resting Place: A Guide to Timber and the Home
When we choose a memorial for a loved one or a cherished companion, we are often looking for more than just a container. We are looking for a piece that feels “at home”—something that sits quietly on a mantle or a side table, reflecting the life it honours through its natural warmth and character.
At A Cut Above Woodworking, our journey in the Perth Hills began in 2017. In that time, we have learned that the secret to a beautiful memorial is the relationship between the solid timber we select and the room where it will eventually rest.
Here is how to choose a timber species that harmonises with your home setting.
The Warmth of Tradition: Jarrah
Best for: Classic homes, heritage spaces, and rooms with deep, rich tones.
Jarrah is perhaps our most iconic Australian hardwood. It is celebrated for its deep reddish-brown hues that tend to darken and mature with age, much like a fine wine. If your home features traditional furniture, warm lighting, or leather accents, a Jarrah vessel provides a sense of enduring strength.
It is a substantial timber that feels “grounded.” We often suggest it for formal living areas or quiet studies where its polished lustre can catch the afternoon sun.
The Golden Storyteller: Marri
Best for: Contemporary Australian homes, open-plan living, and nature-inspired decors.
Marri is a timber of incredible character. Unlike more uniform woods, its honey-coloured grain is often interrupted by dark, natural gum lines that tell the story of the tree’s life in the bush.
If your home is filled with natural light, indoor plants, or neutral tones, Marri is a beautiful companion. It has a “lighter” soul than Jarrah, making it a focal point without being heavy. Its golden highlights pair wonderfully with modern stone benchtops or linen soft furnishings.
The Sophisticated Classic: Walnut
Best for: Modern minimalist settings, mid-century design, and monochromatic rooms.
Walnut is favoured for its cool, chocolatey tones and elegant, swirling grain. It is a wood of quiet sophistication. For those whose style leans toward the clean lines of Scandinavian or Mid-Century Modern design, Walnut offers a perfect match.
Because it lacks the red undertones of many Australian natives, it sits comfortably alongside black accents, matte finishes, and grey colour palettes. It is a refined choice that feels both timeless and current.
Tips for Placing Your Memorial
When you bring a solid timber vessel into your home, consider these three elements to ensure it looks its best:
- Light is Life: Natural sunlight will bring out the “glow” in timbers like Marri and Jarrah. However, to preserve the natural wax finish we apply in our workshop, we suggest placing it in a spot that receives filtered light rather than the harsh midday sun.
- Contrast and Cohesion: You do not need to match your timber exactly to your floorboards. In fact, a dark Jarrah vessel can look stunningly dignified on a lighter oak or pine sideboard. Contrast creates a dedicated space for memory.
- The Tactile Connection: Timber is a material that invites touch. We finish our pieces with organic waxes specifically so they feel “alive.” Place yours where it can be reached—where you can run a hand over the grain when you pass by.
Our Promise of Quality
Every piece we have created since 2017 is built from solid timber, never veneers. Whether you choose the deep red of the forest or the golden hue of the plains, you are choosing a material that is as unique and permanent as the bond it represents.
